About Lead the Seed's Camp Solar

​

Once called DC Interactive, Camp Solar  is a new mentoring model designed to give our youth the exposure and agency that every child needs to be a life-long learner in the 21st century and beyond. A vibrant community of local entrepreneurs, artists, and mentoring leaders are so excited to get in touch with our youth and join them on brain boosting field trips, innovative projects, and supportive homework help & tutoring experiences.

Camps are available for children who will be entering fifth through the eighth grade. High School students 15 and above, may apply for a volunteer position as a Camp Coach Assistant (CCA). See "Volunteer" tab for more information and the application. 

 

Camp Solar is committed to creating a meaningful and welcoming camp experience for all campers. If your camper needs special accommodations, please list any pertinent information with your registration materials, or contact the Camp Program Director, Cortnie Miller at (240) 350-7866.

 

Our Day

 

Welcome

Rain or shine, your child will be welcomed by our Camps 4 the Culture staff at our community check point, The Bowen Clubhouse in Bowie, MD.  With access to the metro  Bowie Town Center across the street, this is the ideal location to begin our exploration each day. 

 

Morning

The mind and body are ready to work together for a day of explorations, activities and games that enhance their multiple intelligences while reenergizing their curiosity with local partners like Adinkra Studios in Mount Rainier and The National Building Museum in Washington, DC!

Afternoon

Campers build their own lunch with local food partners then participate in homework help & academic coaching sessions to include test preparation, personal learning style strategies, reading book clubs and more!

Pick Up/ Drop Off

​

Campers must have their own transportation to and from camp each day. Drop-off and pick-up is supervised by Camp Staff each day beginning at 7:30am at the The Bowen Clubhouse, our community check point.  

​

Pick-up is at 3:00 pm, and is located inside of The Bowen.   

 

Self-release forms are available upon request from the  Camp Director. They require a parent signature and all parent contact information. Campers under the age of 13 are not permitted to have self-release forms, regardless of parent approval. The self-release form waives all responsibility and liability of the Lead the Seed and Camps 4 the Culture.  Volunteers will be able to sign themselves in and out of camp each day.

What Campers Should Bring/Wear

• Personal novel or homework assignment

• Please dress for the weather with comfortable clothes for walking, running, and even getting dirty. 

• fully charged Smartphone with Cover and headphones (campers assume 100% responsibility in the care of their devices)

• Money for lunch (expect to spend $10-15/ day).  After short nutrition mini-session, campers will make their own lunches at with local food partners who specialize in nutrition.  They may decide to put money together to share or spend it individually. Camp Director and counselors will guide students in appropriate food selection and spending.

What Camps 4 the Culture Will Provide

• Materials for all group sessions 

• Gift cards to purchase apps and games associated with activities ​

Medication/Allergies
 

If your camper needs medication throughout the week, please give it to one of the Camp Director on the first day of camp.  Camp Staff is not allowed to administer any medication; all medication must be self-administered (with the exception of epi-pens). Please make camp staff aware of any medical concerns you may have. 

 

In order to prevent sickness from spreading through camp, sick campers should stay home. This includes symptoms like fever, throwing up, and lice. If your camper is having symptoms the night before, please keep them at home the next day.

 

Please note that Camp Solar is NOT a nut-free camp. Camp Staff does their best to accommodate allergies, but we do not restrict any foods from camp as a whole. Please be sure to list any allergies in your registration materials so we will be sure to adhere to your child's specific needs.

When do we call you?
 

There are times when it is necessary to call you or your alternate emergency contact. These include, but are not limited to:

• When a camper is too ill to continue with the activities.

• When a camper exhibits unsafe behaviors in public spaces

• When a camper is physically or verbally hurtful to instructors, staff, fellow campers, or guests

 

 

Enrollment Information

$65 Registration Fee is required and will be applied to the first day of camp fees. 

 

Camp Cancellation Policy

Cancellations should be made at least 5 days before the camp begins. Camps 4 the Culture will retain a $25 processing fee per child after cancellation.  In case of cancellation, reservation fees will not be returned.  

​

No refund is available for cancellations once the camp begins.

​

All forms and waivers must be completed by the first day of each new session.
